CHAPTER FIFTEEN
JULIAN STARED AT THE bizarre glowing staff in utter disbelief.
Previously, the weapon had looked rotting and decayed - bleached white dragon's bones on a rippling synthetic banner. The whole thing looked like it'd fall apart at any moment.
But now, after a single cast of the spell, the dragon was slowly coming to life.
The empty skull was filing out with flesh and scales. Fire glistened in the eyes. Julian could have sworn he saw a faint pupil flicker back and forth. The mouth opened just the smallest inch, revealing a row of rotten teeth. The life abruptly terminated at the base of the neck, granting the majestic head a bizarre and disproportioned appearance. The head was massive, larger than even a Mech's, but the spine-like flagpole was as thin as ever.
A tongue flickered out, and then withdrew just as quickly, as if repulsed by the salty water. The dragon made an almost comical face of disgust.
Julian groaned.
In just a moment, the overwhelming strength of the Font of Life had reversed Felix's position. Just a second earlier, it seemed like his team was about to take a decisive lead. Now Julian's friend was lying dead in the water.
Julian winced.
The rapidly growing pit in his stomach made it hard to focus. As much as he wanted to be a dispassionate observer - a professional Overdrive player looking to learn and grow with the best - he couldn't help but worry for his friends.
He'd only met Phillips for a while, but he respected her skills and diligence.
And Felix...his friend had been trying to become a pro through any means necessary for so long.
Was he really going to lose this amazing opportunity just because of a blatantly overpowered Mech? It seemed almost painfully unfair.
To an outsider, it might have seemed like Felix made a mistake. He'd overextended into a trap, and now his team was in a horrible position. But in reality, the imposter's strategy was devilishly clever. When given access to an overpowered machine, most teams would try to overwhelm their opponents with raw firepower. Instead, she'd defeated Felix with an excess of healing and supportive potential.
The strategy was the perfect way to abuse the Font of Life's global healing ability. Julian had encountered degenerate loops in other games before. In trading card games, a two-card instant win combination could sometimes render the metagame unplayable until the next banned and restricted list.
Similar things sometimes happened in MOBAs or VRPGs like Overdrive. When powerful new game elements - whether they be cards, items, characters, or weapons - were introduced without insufficient playtesting, the result was usually very unpleasant for the dedicated player base. Individually powerful items could combine with previously unknown strategies to create something blatantly unfair.
Julian still didn't know what his friend was supposed to do.
If he didn't try and kill the tank, it would have healed itself.
When he did try, the Font of Life instantly healed the bulky Ace unit, allowing for a totally unexpected ambush.
Despite his incredible earlier shotcalling, Felix's team was now firmly on the back foot.
